Day 31 De Ridder to Opelousas, Louisiana

This ride went as planned as our second consecutive day exceeding 88 miles. We are witnessing that Louisiana motorists are very courtesy to us, and the road surfaces today were better than foretold by other southern tier riders, with exceptions at the end of the route and in our destination town of Opelousas. The Steve’s stopped at a small grocery market and Doug stopped at a full service gas station for a simple food break (our lunch), where the local patrons showed a lot of interest and well wishes to us.

The scenery on the route was dominated by crop land for rice and crawfish ponds. We saw this for miles and often these fields would be adjacent. Over one area of rice fields we saw a most daring crop duster spraying something that likely drifted our way. Steve and I were both private pilots over 35 years ago and the daring flight of the airplane was amazing to us. I actually caught two pictures while riding.

We also met another daring adventurer, Megan from Seattle, who is currently doing a self supported east-to-west cross country tour that she began on March 28th. She is self supported, camping with some hotels, and carries a minimum of gear. Despite our own pride in taking on this tour challenge, we marvel at her attempt and other solitary self supported riders. Go Megan!

    1. Bob, I appreciate your following the posts, and I totally agree with your comment. We have seen two separate young individuals self supporting with a combination of hotels and camping. Also a more mature group that were doing the full bike packing camping routine. I foolishly used to think that is how I wanted to do it, but after experiencing the daily hotels and team SAG support from Carol and Julie, I would not consider the bike packing across the country. The riding is hard enough and the luxury of a hotel bed and shower with dinner out is now my baseline for any extended bicycle travel.
