Why ride a bicycle across the country?

This has been a dream for decades and a bucket list goal of mine.  I love the freedom and exhilaration of  being on the road, and the physical act of pedaling a bicycle for long hours, especially with friends and in novel venues.  I am  trying to compare this event to the spontaneity of Forrest Gump’s impromptu cross country runs, “I just felt like running“.  Well I just feel like riding every day I can on an epic journey across the USA.  However, in contrast to Forrest Gump,  there is nothing impromptu about this plan.

Thankfully in September 2021, the three of us did a 14 day ride from Portland, Maine to Richmond Virginia with Doug and Steve’s wives’ providing luggage transport and SAG support as planned for this trip.  Steve and Doug had previously completed a similar ride prior to that from Richmond to southern Florida.  These experiences have hopefully prepared us well. This event will be three times as long in duration and mileage.

Doug Wayne, Steve Hurd, and Steve Leibovic on day 12 of Portland, ME to Richmond, VA September 2021.

I need to mention that both Doug and Steve are recently retired Richmond, VA doctors, and will celebrate turning 70 years old! I am the youngest, coincidentally turning 66 on Day 1 of the trip. Whatever effort this is now, I contemplate how I could possibly do this four years older to match super fit Doug and Steve Leibo.

  1. So, March 12th is coming up pretty quickly !!! Where are your starting from, and where do you finish? Will it be like the Portland to RVA trip where you will have SAG?? YES, I will follow your trip

    1. Jan, yes, we are SAG supported like our previous Portland to Richmond trip. You can see the route and end cities in other post, but it is from San Diego to St, Augustine Beach. Thank you.
